Why traders watch short interest
Short interest is the number of shares sold short and not yet covered. Days to cover (shares short divided by average daily volume) says how many days of normal trading it would take shorts to buy back. Academic work has found that heavily shorted stocks, and especially those with high days to cover, have tended to underperform (for example Hong, Li, Ni, Scheinkman and Yan, Days to Cover and Stock Returns, NBER working paper 21166), while sharp rises in short interest in low-float names can also set up squeezes. Our own test on every FINRA report since 2018 found the classic effect has faded: the most-shorted stocks still lagged, but not reliably. Read the research. Test it yourself: the full history since December 2017 is in the API, alongside survivorship-free prices.
