Frequently asked questions
How much oil does the world use per day?
The 47 countries in the FinzData world panel used 65.1 million barrels of oil products a day in Jul 2026, −6.0% against a year earlier. The panel is a fixed set of countries that have reported every month since 2009, so it tracks the trend in world oil demand consistently.
Which countries consume the most oil?
The largest consumers in the data are United States, China, India, Japan, Canada. The full table of 60 countries is on the oil demand dashboard, with gasoline, diesel and jet fuel for each.
How much oil does China use?
China used 13.3 million barrels a day of oil products in August 2026, −20.3% against a year earlier. FinzData has China's gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, LPG, naphtha and fuel oil demand monthly.
How much gasoline does the US use per day?
US gasoline demand (product supplied) averaged 8.63 million barrels a day over the four weeks to October 23, 2026, −0.7% against the same weeks a year earlier. Weekly data runs back to 1991.
What is oil demand destruction?
Demand destruction is a lasting fall in oil use caused by high prices or a weak economy. It shows up in fuel consumption data before it shows up in annual statistics: in the FinzData world panel, demand fell 9.2% year on year in Jun 2026, the steepest drop since 2020.
What is fuel consumption?
Fuel consumption is how much of each oil product an economy uses, measured in thousand barrels per day: gasoline, diesel / gasoil, jet fuel, kerosene, LPG, naphtha and fuel oil. (A car's fuel consumption, in litres per 100 km or miles per gallon, is a different measure.)
How is the world series built?
The world panel adds up the 47 countries that have reported every month since 2009. Holding the panel fixed keeps the trend consistent: a change in the series is a change in demand, not a change in which countries reported.
How often is it updated?
Every day. Country data refreshes as new monthly figures are published, and US weekly data follows each Weekly Petroleum Status Report.
Do you have electricity data?
Yes. The same Energy theme carries 1,000+ electricity series: electricity prices per kilowatt-hour across US cities, utility producer prices and electric power output, with energy prices for other countries.
How do I buy it?
Fuel consumption is part of the Energy theme ($29 once), and of Macro Latest and Macro Complete. A free API key gets the last 12 months of every series.
Where does the data come from?
Country and world series are built from the JODI Oil World Database (Joint Organisations Data Initiative). US weekly series come from the US Energy Information Administration Weekly Petroleum Status Report.
