The licence cliff
Searching for a Polygon.io alternative? Massive is Polygon.io, renamed 2025-10-30 — this page compares the current product.
Massive's individual stocks tiers, as published on massive.com/pricing (checked 2026-10-17):
| Tier | Price | History window | Calls | Data recency |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $0 | 2 years | 5/min | End-of-day only |
| Starter | $29/mo | 5 years | Unlimited | 15-minute delayed |
| Developer | $79/mo | 10 years | Unlimited | Real-time, IEX feed only; websockets |
| Advanced | $199/mo | 20+ years | Unlimited | Full SIP real-time; websockets + flat files |
Two facts in that table deserve plain statements:
- The tiers are personal-use. The licence that lets a business actually use the data commercially is Massive Business at $2,499/month — $29,988 a year. The jump from "my side project started earning" to compliant is not a tier step; it's a cliff from $199 to $2,499 a month.
- "Real-time" at $79 is the IEX feed — one exchange, roughly 2.5% of US volume. Consolidated SIP real-time starts at $199. And below Advanced, financials are a separate $29/month add-on (Financials & Ratios), and Massive's financials carry filing dates but no point-in-time vintage trail — restatements are not preserved as a history of what was known when.
FinzData's commercial tier is published and self-serve: Institutional, $975 once + $59.95/month ($1,694.40 in year 1) pricing. No sales call, and the price is on this page because it is on ours.
The window problem
On Massive, your tier decides how much of the past you are allowed to see: 2, 5, 10 or 20+ years. A backtest that reaches past the window doesn't error — it truncates. FinzData bundles work the other way: you buy a span of history (5 to 30 years) and it is complete inside that span, delisted names included, and it remains yours if you stop the updates pricing.
The history remains yours if you stop the updates — a history position you own rather than access you rent. See what happens to your history if a vendor shuts down.
The industry's best value against Massive pricing
Start with exactly what your research needs, pay once, and own it:
The one-time price buys the history outright. Daily updates are $19.95 a month, and they are your choice: stop them at any time and every year you bought stays yours, so your cost stops at the one-time price. Every paid purchase has no API call limit, and re-running the same history a hundred ways costs nothing extra.
Commercial use, without the cliff. Institutional is $975 once plus $59.95 a month: every dataset, full history, tick-level trades and a commercial licence, self-serve. Massive's business licence is $2,499 a month. Every price is on the shop.
A Massive alternative you own: what you get with FinzData
- Ownership. Buy the years once and keep them. Bulk files and Parquet on your own machines, under a licence that lets you use them in any stack, any cloud and any future platform. Stop the updates and the history you bought stays yours.
- Breadth. 16,000+ US stocks with the delisted names still in them, 231 ETFs, 139 futures markets with 17,605 contracts, 18,000+ macro series, COT since 1986, 13F for every manager, options-market gamma, crypto since 2015 and point-in-time fundamentals, on one key.
- Depth. 26+ years of history at every resolution you backtest on: 1-minute, 5-minute, 15-minute, 30-minute, hourly and daily, with tick-level trades on the Institutional plan.
- Time, kept honest. Every row is stamped with the moment it became known. Macro arrives as first published, GEX as it stood after the close, COT on the day the CFTC released it.
- Signals no one else sells this way. Point-in-time dealer gamma exposure, the gamma flip and the walls, and the Quantitative Model's regime labels for growth, inflation, liquidity, credit and risk.
- Built for AI. A Python client that works like yfinance, an MCP server for Claude and ChatGPT, and an agent pricing tier, so your own agents read your data in your own tools.
- Value. The whole US market from $195 once plus $19.95 a month for daily updates, one ticker from $19, and no API call limit on any paid purchase.
