FinzData vs Financial Modeling Prep: the widest menu, and the question of trust

Financial Modeling Prep sells the widest endpoint menu in this category for the money, and if endpoints per dollar were the whole decision, this page would be short. It isn't the whole decision. FMP has the most documented billing-and-support complaint trail of any vendor we researched — keys, limits and data errors, in users' own words, over years. If you are reading this page, there is a fair chance you already know that trail from the inside. Prices and terms on this page were checked against each vendor's published pages on 2026-10-17.

The short version

Concede the strength first: FMP's catalogue is enormous — statements, ratios, screeners, calendars, transcripts, and more, at $29–$139/month self-serve prices that no research-grade vendor matches endpoint-for-endpoint. For a dashboard or a screener prototype, it is a rational buy.

The problems arrive when the data has to be right and the account has to be yours:

  • Data for companies that no longer exist. A reviewer on SourceForge (2023-08-19) documented "data for securities that have been redeemed and extinguished years ago, and I received phantom trading data for some tickers on days that were exchange holidays." A vendor can fail the integrity test in two directions — dead companies missing, or dead companies still trading. FMP's documented failures are the second kind.
  • Limits imposed after subscribing. QuantLabs' review roundup (2025-06-26) quotes a subscriber: "They imposed a bandwidth limitation which is so tight I can't even download once the full set of NYSE stocks history data. They freeze my account usage." The limit that governs your work was not the limit on the pricing page when you paid.
  • The cancellation shock. The documented practice that converts departing customers into public reviewers: an authentication key killed the moment a cancellation notice is sent — with prepaid time still remaining on it.
  • The licences. Every self-serve tier is a personal licence. Display or redistribute — the moment your project becomes a product — and you need a separate Data Display and Licensing Agreement, priced in a negotiation, not on the page.
  • No point-in-time guarantee. FMP lists delisted companies, but guarantees no survivorship-free historical universe, and its as-reported endpoints leave point-in-time reconstruction as a do-it-yourself project.

FinzData's counter is a smaller, deeper product sold on published terms: point-in-time fundamentals with every vintage, a survivorship-free universe that includes the dead, a commercial licence with the price printed on it, and a status page where the data's health is public.

The arithmetic

FMP's annual billing is real and verified (read on its own pricing page, 2026-10-17): Starter $228/yr, Premium $588/yr, Ultimate $1,188/yr. Against an owned archive, the research tiers cross quickly.

Premium (annual, $588/yr) vs the FinzData 25-year bundle ($575 once + $19.95/mo):

End of yearFMP Premium (cumulative)FinzData 25-yr (cumulative)
1$588.00$814.40
2$1,176.00$1,053.80
3$1,764.00$1,293.20
5$2,940.00$1,772.00
10$5,880.00$2,969.00

The lines cross during year 2; by year 10 the difference is $2,911 — and the FinzData column ends with an archive on your disk, while the FMP column ends, per its documented practice, with a key switched off.

Ultimate (annual, $1,188/yr) vs FinzData Institutional ($975 once + $59.95/mo) — the comparison that matters if your use is commercial, since Ultimate's sticker is a personal licence and Institutional's is a commercial one:

End of yearFMP Ultimate (cumulative)FinzData Institutional (cumulative)
1$1,188.00$1,694.40
3$3,564.00$3,133.20
5$5,940.00$4,572.00
10$11,880.00$8,169.00

Honesty requires one more line: FMP's Starter on annual billing, $228/yr, is cheaper in cash than any FinzData paid step. If endpoints per dollar on a personal project is your metric, FMP wins it. This page's argument is about the projects where the metric changes.

If you're leaving anyway

If you are an FMP customer with prepaid time remaining, show us the invoice: we credit the remaining term, up to $100, against any FinzData bundle pricing. Their customers are the one pool in this category that rarely needs persuading — just a door.

An honest word on who should choose which

Choose FMP if you are building a screener, dashboard or prototype on a personal project, you want the broadest endpoint menu per dollar in the industry, and your work does not depend on point-in-time rigour or a commercial licence. The menu is real, and the sticker prices are genuinely low.

Choose FinzData if any of these are true: the data feeds a backtest you would have to defend — to an investor, a client, or yourself in three years; your use is commercial or displayed, and you want the licence bought with a credit card at a published price; or you have already lived one chapter of the trail above — the frozen account, the post-subscription limit, the key that died on cancellation — and priced what it cost you.

A vendor confident in its data invites the test; run it on both of us.

Frequently asked questions

What does FMP cost on annual billing?

Starter $228/yr, Premium $588/yr, Ultimate $1,188/yr — annual billing at $19/$49/$99 per month, verified on FMP's pricing page on 2026-10-17.

What happens to my FMP key if I cancel?

The documented practice is that the authentication key is killed the moment a cancellation notice is sent — with prepaid time still remaining on it. With FinzData, you keep the history you bought; only the updates stop.

Which works out cheaper over 10 years?

Premium on annual billing ($588/yr) against the FinzData 25-year bundle ($575 once + $19.95/mo): the lines cross during year 2, and by year 10 it is $5,880 against $2,969 — a difference of $2,911. One honesty line: FMP's Starter at $228/yr is cheaper in cash than any FinzData paid step.

Does FMP include delisted stocks?

A delisted-companies endpoint exists, but there is no survivorship-free universe guarantee. The documented failures run the other way: a SourceForge reviewer (2023-08-19) reported data for securities that had been redeemed and extinguished years ago. FinzData keeps 16,000+ stocks including 8,500+ delisted, point-in-time.

Are FMP's fundamentals point-in-time?

No. FMP's as-reported endpoints plus filing dates leave point-in-time reconstruction as a do-it-yourself project. FinzData's are as originally filed, with every vintage retained.

I have prepaid FMP time left. Can I get credit for switching?

Yes: show us the invoice and we credit the remaining term, up to $100, against any FinzData bundle.
