Comparison

FinzData vs Sharadar: same discipline, different deed

Sharadar is the benchmark for point-in-time fundamentals — we say so plainly, because it's true. The difference between us is not rigour. It's that Sharadar rents you the past and takes it back when you stop paying, while FinzData sells you the history outright — and covers the dimensions Sharadar doesn't sell at any price: intraday bars, futures, COT and macro vintages. Prices and terms on this page were checked against each vendor's published pages on 2026-10-17.

The short version

Both products exist for the same reason: backtests built on survivorship-biased, restated data are fiction. Sharadar's as-reported fundamentals, indexed by filing date with restatements excluded, are the category standard, and its universe keeps delisted names with their delisting dates and reasons. FinzData makes the same two commitments — point-in-time fundamentals with every vintage retained, and a survivorship-free universe of 16,000+ stocks including 8,500+ delisted names.

Where the products diverge:

  • Ownership. Sharadar's all-in retail bundle is $29/month — $348 a year, every year, and the licence requires you to delete the data within 30 days of termination. A FinzData bundle is bought once; if you later stop the $19.95/month updates, the history stays on your disk.
  • Dimensions. Sharadar is end-of-day only. There is no intraday product at any price. Every FinzData look-back bundle, from $195, carries 1-, 5-, 15- and 30-minute, hourly and daily bars going back more than 26 years, and the catalogue adds futures (139 markets since 2007), COT positioning (950+ markets since 1986) and 18,000+ macro series with every revision.
  • Commercial use. Sharadar's retail licence is personal use by natural persons only — no entity use of any kind. Commercial users are sent to Nasdaq Data Link, which does not publish the commercial price on its public pages (checked 2026-10-17), so the number comes from a sales process. FinzData's commercial tier is published and self-serve: $975 once + $59.95/month pricing.

If you stop paying: delete it, or keep it

Sharadar's all-in retail bundle is $29/month — $348 a year, every year, and the licence requires you to delete the data within 30 days of termination. A FinzData bundle is bought once; if you later stop the $19.95/month updates, the history stays on your disk.

At any point in the Sharadar column, stopping means deleting the data within 30 days. At any point in the FinzData column, stopping the updates means exactly that — the past stays where you put it. See our survival terms — no delete-on-cancel clause.

The arithmetic: rent vs own

Sharadar is cheaper at first, and this page won't pretend otherwise. Here is the cumulative cost of each, year by year (Sharadar bundle at $348/yr; FinzData 25-year bundle at $575 once plus $19.95/mo):

End of yearSharadar (cumulative)FinzData 25-yr (cumulative)
1$348.00$814.40
2$696.00$1,053.80
3$1,044.00$1,293.20
5$1,740.00$1,772.00
6$2,088.00$2,011.40
10$3,480.00$2,969.00

Read it honestly: from year 2 onward your annual cost is lower with FinzData ($239.40 against $348), and the cumulative lines cross during year 6 — by year 10 you have paid $511 less, and the history is yours. On the 10-year bundle ($290 once + $19.95/mo), the cumulative crossover arrives during year 3. And the table understates the real difference, because it prices only the subscription years: at any point in the Sharadar column, stopping means deleting the data within 30 days. At any point in the FinzData column, stopping the updates means exactly that — the past stays where you put it.

Start free. FinzData's free tier is $0: 1,000 calls a day, the last 12 months of data, and no card required to start pricing. It is enough to run both vendors' numbers side by side on your own work before either of us gets a dollar — the paid step, when it comes, is the owned history priced in the table above.

The end-of-day ceiling

A Sharadar subscription answers daily questions superbly. It cannot answer an intraday one: there is no 1-minute or 5-minute product, so testing whether a signal survives intraday execution means a second vendor. The same applies outside equities — no futures, no COT, no macro vintages in the catalogue we checked (2026-10-17). FinzData is one purchase across those dimensions pricing. If your research is EOD-only and likely to stay that way, this section is not an argument against Sharadar; the box below says so.

An honest word on who should choose which

Choose Sharadar if your research is end-of-day fundamentals, you work as a private individual, and you don't expect to need intraday data or a commercial licence. Its as-reported fundamentals are excellent — the standard ours are measured against — and $29/month is a fair rent for them. Choose it, too, if your code is built on the SF1 table schema and migration isn't worth your time this year.

Choose FinzData if any of these are true: your strategy work touches intraday bars; you research futures, positioning or macro alongside equities; you are — or might become — a fund, company or publisher, and need a commercial licence you can read the price of before you buy; or you simply want the past to be an asset you own rather than a service you rent.

Run the check either way. Don't take this page's word for the data — take the data's. Whichever vendor you choose, run your incumbent through it first.
